Excuse Me: I Need to Spend Some Alone Time with my Art Supplies

Art journaling is not new. It is the permission-giving act of doodling, meandering, complaining or celebrating in a way that uses all those artsy supplies that you bought and haven’t touched since. Are yours lonley?

Your art journal is a safe place to take your shyness, your bravado, and your willingness to the page to make marks, to tell, and to try new things or embrace the stuff you love best. An art journal is a low-pressure home that can ground you or transport you without leaving your chair.

The journal, itself can be as unique at the people who journal in them. Turning an old book into a treasure that becomes a fun friend and trusted confidant is part of the journey for me.

What I love about creating an art journal out of an old book:

  • Rescues unloved books and gives them a new life.

  • Keeps old books out of landfills.

  • Acheives notority and may become banned in certain circles.

  • Costs pennies instead of dollars.

  • Forgiving and supportive. (And we all need that in our art.)

  • Allows cutting and pasting in the old school way.

  • Waits patiently until you are ready.

“Journaling is like whispering to one’s self and listening at the same time.” – Mina Murray

“Sitting for even five minutes with a journal offers a rare cease-fire in the battle of daily life” – Alexandra Johnson

Well, I’ve lingered here long enough. I need some alone time with my art supplies and my art journal.

Have a creative day,

Diana
